2020 Faculty Mentoring Award Winner

Rachael Miller Neilan

Dr. Neilan is an associate professor of mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. She earned her BS from Drexel University and both her MS and PhD from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her research specialties include population and disease modeling, agent-based modeling, and optimal control theory. Dr. Neilan has advised numerous undergraduate research projects in applied mathematics. Many of her students have presented their research and local and national conferences, won awards for their scholarship, and published their results in scholarly journals. Dr. Neilan designed and taught two community-engaged courses in mathematics in which students use differential equations to study issues impacting the local community. Additionally, Dr. Neilan co-founded a Women in STEM organization at Duquesne that promotes and supports female students in STEM disciplines through mentorship, professional development workshops, community outreach, and travel awards.
